RESCHEDULED: The habitat workday for the Nettle Ridge project in the Loyalsock State Forest is now rescheduled for this Saturday, March, 30th.

Work:

Felling and bucking smaller 4 – 10″ diameter trees. Those uncomfortable with dropping trees can buck the felled ones!

Why:

The Nettle Ridge Ruffed Grouse Society Drummer Fund Project is a new, long-term habitat-creation project that will expand in acreage and will serve as a pilot study for similar state forest land across Pennsylvania. The goal is to create and maintain ruffed grouse habitat on non-commercial tracts of public land through short-term rotational cutting. This is all-hands-on-deck, but know that no one will be asked or expected to make any cut or drop any tree they don’t feel comfortable with. Again, these are smaller trees that volunteers with minimal felling experience should be comfortable with. A good example of the size of trees we will be cutting can be seen in the photo below, which was taken during a work day at the project site in October…

What to Bring:

Chainsaws, chainsaw chaps, hard hat, eye protection, and hearing protection*. Bring your own mixed gas and bar oil if you’re particular about the brand/type. Dress for the elements, layers, gloves, etc. Parking is a couple hundred yards from where the work will be done. *Required to run a chainsaw or while in immediate areas of cutting.

Inclement Weather:

In the event of steady rain or high winds, we will likely postpone to a later date.

WE WILL FEED YOU! … IF YOU COULD HELP US GET A MORE ACCURATE HEADCOUNT TO BEST PREPARE, PLEASE RSVP (if possible, but don’t let that keep you at home!) OR DIRECT ANY QUESTIONS TO BLAUDERMIL@PA.GOV
